The Board of the Civic Association of Hollin Hills (CAHH) has created a committee to pursue nomination of Hollin Hills to the National Register of Historic Places. The prestigious honor of National Register designation has several advantages for our special community beyond enhancing value and appeal of our properties. It will expand knowledge of our community's historic and unique value while encouraging preservation.

National Register Nomination Project: House Types and Time Line (An Update)

In July, the survey forms compiled for the National Register of Historic Places nomination project were turned over to Hollin Hills’s consultants, EHT Traceries. Each house in Hollin Hills now has an identified house type and architect(s), if known, for addition(s) or for the entire house if not designed by Charles Goodman. We welcome review of the document online with all this information, at House Types. The document in PDF format is searchable, and contains only basic information. Each survey form actually has much more detail about the structure of each house and related outbuildings.

Moving forward, CAHH is pursing the following time line:

September/October 2009 – Completion of survey forms data entry and draft of National Register of Historic Places registration form prepared by EHT Traceries

December 2009/January 2010 – Draft registration form reviewed by Hollin Hills National Register Nomination Committee

January 2010 – Submission of first draft of registration form for content review to the regional office of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR)

February 2010 – Submission of second draft of registration form and survey forms for content and format review to the main and regional offices of VDHR

June 2010 – Submission of third draft of registration form and survey forms in preparation for VDHR’s State Review Board meeting

June/July 2010 – Letters sent by VDHR to owners of properties in the proposed National Register Historic District (i.e., the neighborhood of Hollin Hills) to let them know of upcoming public hearing

July/August 2010 – Public hearing scheduled locally to take place 45-65 days prior to VDHR’s State Review Board meeting, with EHT Traceries making a presentation on the historic district nomination and a VHDR representative discussing tax credits and the nomination process

September 2010 – VDHR’s State Review Board meeting to (a) recommend sending the nomination application to the National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places for approval and (b) designate the Hollin Hills Historic District to the Virginia Landmarks Register

October/November 2010 – VDHR sends application to the National Register for approval

December 2010/January 2011 – National Register of Historic Places reviews nomination application and designates Hollin Hills as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places
