The Board of the Civic Association of Hollin Hills (CAHH) has created a committee to pursue nomination of Hollin Hills to the National Register of Historic Places. The prestigious honor of National Register designation has several advantages for our special community beyond enhancing value and appeal of our properties. It will expand knowledge of our community's historic and unique value while encouraging preservation.

Please look for monthly articles in the Hollin Hills Bulletin; these will broaden our understanding of the project and related topics.

In the traditional spirit of Hollin Hills, success will require volunteering of our time, our talents, and our money. We look forward to your assistance in this important project.

As we enter the survey phase

of the National Register of Historic Places Nomination Project, we are looking for volunteers to survey and photograph the neighborhood and provide sustenance for those volunteers. Since the project’s inception, many Hollin Hillers have indicated that they would be willing to help out. Finally, we can now request your help on specific dates. A form with more detailed information form is included in the Bulletin, and available here on our website. Please complete and return this form by February 10 if you can work on this critical part of the project.

Surveyors and photographs are asked to attend a training session on Thursday, February 16. (Additional training sessions will be available during the survey weekends.) Laura Trieschmann, who works with Traceries, a historic preservation consulting firm, will brief us on how to complete the survey forms and on the specific photography requirements for the nomination.

We are asking volunteers to help on two days during the four weekends we have aside from February 18 through March 12 to complete the survey and take photographs. (March 18-19 is the backup weekend.) Surveyors will be working in teams of two; photographers may be able to work independently. There are certainly many good cooks and bakers in Hollin Hills and we hope that some neighbors can provide refreshments for those volunteers who will be gamely trudging around the neighborhood to document it!

Again, more detailed information can be found on the Volunteer Form or by contacting me directly. We are very excited to be moving into the survey phase and hope you are, too!

Our Timeline

The Hollin Hills National Register Nomination Project began unofficially in November 2003 with a slide presentation by Joey Lampl about the process of putting Charles Goodman-designed neighborhoods in Montgomery County, Maryland, on the National Register of Historic Places. The project's official life began in April 2004 with the appointment of the Hollin Hills National Register Nomination Committee.

The rate the 2- to 3-year project (April 2004 to April 2007) will move forward is dependent on how quickly an estimated $35,000 can be raised and the time it takes to accomplish each task. Based on funds received, the first phase of the Nomination Project may begin in fall 2004, writing the history portion of the nomination. The next phase is to prepare the Preliminary Information Form (PIF) required by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Subsequent phases are listed below.
